Posee una fauna compuesta por más de 280 especies de vertebrados, incluyendo algunas resistencias significativas de la fauna del territorio español como el águila imperial, el buitre negro, la cigüeña negra o el lince, especies que hoy en día se encuentran en peligro de extinción.
El Parque Nacional de Monfragüe conforma una Zona de Especial Protección de Aves única, donde se encuentra la mayor colonia reproductora de Buitre negro , la mayor concentración mundial de Águila imperial ibérica y una de las mayores colonias de Cigüeña negra.
Hace pocos años el Parque Nacional de Monfragüe fue nombrado Parque Nacional gracias a su diversidad como espacio único, irrepetible y representativo de la biodiversidad española.
